A lazy dog?

Sunday morning in Duthie Park is 'meet and greet' time and this week I was introduced to a grand new pup called Dexter.

Can you believe that Dexter is only 14 weeks old and already bigger than me!

He is, of course, an Old English Sheepdog, a breed we rarely see in these parts. (Gail thinks that might have something to do with the label 'English'.)

When Gail was herself a youngster - actually a stroppy adolescent - in Nottingham, her mother's friend Angela owned an Old English Sheepdog called Nell.
Gail, age 15, and Nell
I know Gail was very fond of this dog, but still I am thinking that her imitation of Nell's hairstyle was ill-advised. Gail asks in her defence asks how many of her readers can offer photos of themselves as teenagers which feature well-advised hairstyles...
Nell and Angela
Angela herself (a consultant geriatrician) was rather better groomed.

Nell was a calm and gentle character. She was apparently a reluctant walker, who after about half a mile would tend to sit down and refuse to move further. Worried about this, Angela once took her to the vet to have her checked over. Following a thorough examination, the vet pronounced that there was absolutely nothing amiss with Nell, and added "I'm sorry Dr Truman, I think you've just got a lazy dog"!

Nell lived on to a ripe old age so we guess the vet was right.

Nell is quite a lovely wee girlie. Mom used to work with a professor who bred and showed English Sheep dogs. She often had one sitting in her office. Mom loved seeing those shaggy pups and so friendly.
Good thing they had excellent sense of smell 'cause they sure couldn't see anything. Oh my did Mom have some hairstyles in the 60's. You might have just given her an idea.
    Hugs madi your bfff

  6. Oh Bertie, we can't even imagine a puppy with as much energy as Rosy in such a big body!

  7. What a lucky boy you are Bertie, all those lovely pups to meet and greet. I hope you all got on well together.
Our late, and very much missed Petite-Chose was a lazy dog. She would lie down, in the middle of the road, half way through our walk and we had to wait until she was ready to continue !

    Love,
    Inca xx

  8. What a beauty Nell was and Dexter will grow into a handsome fella too! When our pawrents were in Oregon recently and ran along the beach, they would see a Old English Sheepdog who was shaved except for her head and it was fluffed out like a lion. That was a VERY happy dog too!

    Your Pals,

    Murphy & Stanley

  13. Nell and Dexter are both beautiful. I was relieved to discover that no one was suggesting that YOU are a lazy dog, Bertie.

  14. I have always loved English Sheepdogs - though don't have much direct experience.

My hair was rather LARGE when I was 15 so tell Gail not to worry!

  15. Hi hi hi! Ojo here! We have many Old English Sheep Dogs here! They are mostly very sweet and polite, like your Gail's friend, except sometimes when they are teenagers and then they jump on my head and I don't like that. Even though you were bigger than that puppy, I hope the puppy paid you respects as the older and wiser Dog!
