The consolation of philosophy

You would think from this photo that Gail's friend Michael and I were getting along quite companionably by the end of his visit.

Well, "up to a point, Lord Copper". Or at least, we co-existed peacefully provided the following conditions were met:

  • We were outdoors
  • Michael was wearing long trousers and boots
  • There was no food in the vicinity
  • I had already walked ten miles and was a wee bit tired
But sadly, I have to say (British understatement here) I do not think that this particular human being, fine gentleman though he is, Gail assures me, in all other respects, will ever be persuaded of the joys of dog ownership.

It is of course hard not to take this personally. But I shall try to be philosophical about the matter.

I am thinking how lucky I am to live with someone who tolerates my occasional naughtiness, and makes allowances for certain facts about my breed that have long been recognised:

"Fox-terriers are born with about four times as much original sin in them as other dogs."  ~Jerome K. Jerome, Three Men in a Boat

  5. Bertie, Gail loves you just for being you, lets face it the occasional naughtiness which all us terriers do, keeps them on their toes, and if you time it just right and take a look at the face they try sooo hard not to smile lol!!! its what makes us fun to be with.

  7. Bah! Who doesn't love a terrier. I am sure he is a nice chap otherwise, but his doggie genes seem to be a bit short.

  11. It's his loss Bertie! I'm betting that for every one of him there are 10 who would love to have their feet licked by you!

  12. We're sure glad that Gail sees things as they really are (You are so very important) and that she has her priorities right (You are number one.). Who knows? You may even win Michael over. But, if not, it's good that you were an amicable companion. Most of the time. In the meantime, we're hoping that the scarcity of food was resolved and that you've rested up a bit. We're guessing both have happened. In good form.

  13. Oh my Bertie...someone who doesn't appreciate the joys of a terrier??? Mumsie spent most of our walk tonight writing newspaper ads in her demented mind for disposing of us...HA...as if!!...so what if we terrorized a small child (she was on an electric scooter), frightened a puppy...(we barked; big deal) and attempted to attack the ice cream truck that was playing "It's A Small World After All" at top volume...CAN YA BLAME US?

Now as for DATING Katie's new bro...I thought about it...BUT...

Are you ready for this...his dad is Scruffy's brother. So that makes me his Auntie. Katie said Paws Off. Sheesch...

    Kisses!!

  16. Michael's loss. To paraphrase Auntie Mame, life with doggies is a banquet and some poor suckers are starving by their own choice.

Mazel tov on the impressive climbs you've been making. Seems not so long ago that Gail was telling you that you were 'too little' for this activity, and now look at you! We really like the photo of you and Gail triumphant on the summit; hope you have that one framed on the wall.
